Could you remind me that I was born way too soon? Good morning everyone. When I was talking to Gabby and Mo at the river on Saturday about the Cat Camp that was going on, they told me that they were staying in the dorms with the campers. This wasn't surprising, since they are getting rich working as counselors overseeing these incoming Bobcats (almost $1.00 an hour if you do the math)... ;) The "horrible" part is that Gallardia, which is the new dorm that they were staying in, has ONE BEDROOM dorm rooms! Since when does Texas State offer one bedroom rooms? I was born too early... :)
Could you draw a total blank? So yesterday I went back to the river to give my air conditioner a break from the heat of the day (which didn't turn out to be that bad actually). I was back at the ladder, and was getting a decent workout, as the current was pretty strong for some reason. A group of tubers approached me (and EVERY GROUP of tubers was being steered right into the ladder yesterday), and when they reached me, one of the girls asked, "do you remember me?" Almost every time that I don't instantly recognize the person who is asking this question, it's someone who knows me from the hallway going up to the Veranda. Before I responded, this girl added, "from the office..." I don't know why (so don't ask me), but my first..., my IMMEDIATE THOUGHT..., where my head went to..., was the T.V. SHOW, 'The Office' (because..., naturally..., THAT'S WHERE I'm going to know her from - YEAH... :) Of course Anice works in the office at my apartment complex (she isn't always there, some give me SOME slack)... Anyway, welcome to Bikini Hill Anice... :P
Could you stop giving Bobcats a bad name? As my alma mater keeps growing and gaining more notoriety, we're obviously going to attract more media attention. Texas State University enjoyed its first day as a member of the Sun Belt Conference yesterday, but there is one group of Bobcats who keeps tarnishing our fine name. Everytime that I hear ESPN or another sports network use the word 'Bobcats', it immediately gets my attention, but most of the time they are referring to the CHARLOTTE Bobcats, the group who went 21-61 during this past season in the NBA. I was having a discussion with one of my friends at Dad's going away party on Sunday, and he mentioned that his son lives in Charlotte. My immediate response was, "well at least they have good college basketball up there..." :)
Could you tell us more about the weather at the river yesterday Coach? So it was a pretty windy day at the river as it turns out, and just like I was helping out the tubers, I was also assisting the frisbee throwers. Frisbee Dan (knowing or not knowing who this is instantly tells us about your level of familiarity with San Marcos, America) threw his frisbee over the river and onto the cement yesterday when trying to get it to somebody in the river. I was walking back over to Bikini Hill and I picked the frisbee up. I was about to give it to the guys in the river to throw back to him, but they weren't sure if they could do it. Of course Frisbee Dan is waiting for his frisbee, and at this point I told him, "I don't know if I can get it over there - it's pretty windy..." One of the guys in the river was starting to say something to me (because as you know, I'm a hundred years old), so I wound up and RIPPED A THROW OFF, which despite battling the gusty winds, still sailed about FIFTEEN YARDS PAST Frisbee Dan... As I started to resume walking to Bikini Hill, one of the guys in the river mumbles in SHEER AMAZEMENT..., "that was pretty good..." ;)
Could you PLEASE let me go back to sleep? On Saturday night (the eve of my Dad's going away party) I fell asleep at about 11:00 p.m., hoping to get as much sleep as possible, because I knew that I was going to be in San Antonio all day. For no reason, I woke up at about 5:00 a.m., and I just COULD NOT go back to sleep. At this point, I turned on my computer, my t.v., and my phone. When my phone came back to life, I realized that a voicemail message was waiting for me. My friend Scott had called to say that a bunch of guys from work were going to play a little poker, and that I was welcome to come by. I knew that there was a high likelihood that my friends didn't get out of work before 4:00 a.m., so I was sure that everyone was still having fun. I had to wrestle with the decision of whether or not to go and join my friends for about half a second before I started getting dressed... When I arrived, I got a lot of "NOW you show up Coach..." My friend Sean (the one who is a better poker player than me) had just been knocked out of the small tournament that was going on when his hand was rundown by my friend Sam (the one who was a bad influence on me at the 5th Annual Lone Star Music Awards), who sucked out on Sean by hitting a flush with his MONSTER 9 5 suited... As I sat at the table to watch, Sean or my friend Adam proposed that we split Adam's big stack of chips (he was the chip leader at this point), giving me half of them, and then letting me split the profits if I cashed. I didn't propose this, or think that anyone would go for it, but no one had a problem with it, so it was done, and I was playing poker... Not even a full orbit into this six-handed game, the following hand occurred...
>>>>> I was the big blind (2 and 4 blinds) when I looked down at A 6 offsuit. No one raised, and I checked - I believe that 4 of us went to the flop. The flop came 6 6 4, with 2 hearts, and I had about 135 in chips. I wanted to keep people in the hand, so I checked and just called the twenty-something bet by another player. Three of us went to the turn, where the queen of spades hit the board, putting a second flush draw out there. At this point, I decided to shove my remaining 113 chips into the 80ish chip pot. Sam thought for a few seconds, and decided to go all-in over the top of me, for about 130. Sam (who you remember sucked out on Sean right before I arrived) immediately told me, "I'm looking for one card Coach..." Then my friend Justin (okay, they're all my friends) TANKED..., SO MUCH SO that Stew called clock on him... Justin FINALLY folded (I really wasn't sure that I wanted a call if it was by a second flush draw, ESPECIALLY if that would put me up against BOTH the heart draw AND the spade draw)... After Justin's fold, I flipped over my A 6, and then Sam showed his hand, which was naturally..., THREE TWO offsuit... YEAH..., Sam needed for Stew to turn and burn, and then to put a five out on the river to win the hand... If you've been following the ups and downs of my life over the past 21 months since I started writing this blog, you already KNOW that a 5 (1 of only 4 5's in the deck..., and 1 of only 4 cards that could beat me) DID SHOW UP on the river... :) I mean, ALL YOU CAN DO is smile... At least I got to say happy birthday to Dillon... :P
I hope that all of you have a great day, and I'll see you again on Thursday!
Little doubt these campers could beat the Charlotte Bobcats in a pick-up basketball game.
ReplyDeleteClever Lightning - I'm not sure about THIS GROUP of campers though... They were trying to do that thing where the person in the river throws the football to the person that it is jumping in - I don't think that they connected once... :) Have a great 4th!
ReplyDeleteThat IS jumping in - don't worry though, it's not like I write a blog or anything... ;)
